Kids dentists provide multiple services dedicated to preserving or improving your little ones' oral health. Poor oral health can cause a ripple effect in your kid's development. The teeth play an integral role in their functioning, from bone structure and speech to the digestive and respiratory systems. A kids dentist can help set the foundation for years of oral health.
Checkups
The American Pediatric Dental Association recommends that children visit the dentist at least twice a year by 12 months or when their first tooth erupts. Many professionals prefer and recommend that parents seek a kids' dentist or pediatric dentist for their little ones. That is because they are specifically trained in having proper bedside manners with younger patients and can better differentiate issues directly related to kids and their development from general issues.
During the checkup, kids will undergo image testing (X-rays), a physical examination, and a professional cleaning. The dentist will check for developmental and soft tissue abnormalities during the image testing and physical examination. During the cleaning, they or a dental hygienist will remove plaque build-up or tartar with various cleaning techniques. This service helps prevent decay and gum disease.
Dental fillings
Unfortunately, kids do not always properly care for their teeth between appointments. This can lead to decay, which forms small holes in the teeth. The dentist needs to get ahead of this condition before it results in pain, extensive procedures, or, worse, complete tooth loss. The kids' dentist will remove all traces of decay and then use a composite, porcelain, or amalgam (silver) material to fill the space. Note that this treatment does not prevent decay from recurring in the entire tooth, but it will for the filled portion. However, it will restore the functionality, strength, and overall protection of the tooth's inner structures.
Dental sealants
Dental sealants are considered a preventative treatment. They protect the back teeth or molars from food debris and bacteria becoming stuck in their grooves. Considering kids are still learning the proper oral care techniques and their importance, they may not always thoroughly clear the areas. This creates space for bacteria to build and turn into decay. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dental sealants can prevent up to 80 percent of cavities.
This procedure is simple and painless, lasting only a few minutes. After cleaning, the kids' dentist paints a thin coating of material over the molars. It hardens almost instantly. The most discomfort a patient will experience is a possible bitter taste immediately after application. However, this dissipates within a minute or two.
Fluoride treatments
Another popular preventative service is fluoride treatments. Fluoride is a natural substance found in our food and water supply. It is even found in some oral care products, but only in small quantities. Fluoride helps strengthen teeth, which is the first defense against decay and damage. We can apply this quick, painless treatment after every cleaning, such as a varnish, gel, or rinse. Often, kids do not realize that this is what we are doing as we move seamlessly through the cleaning process.
